Pfarrkirche Dorfgastein

The Roman Catholic parish church of Dorfgastein stands in the centre of the village in the Salzburg district of St Johann im Pongau. It is dedicated to Saints Rupert and Virgil and belongs to the Taxenbach deanery within the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The church is protected as a listed monument. The building has early Gothic features with a core that may be Romanesque, including a north tower added before the 17th century. The church was first recorded in 1350 and became an independent parish in 1857. Major restorations took place in 1837, 1926, 1947–48 and again in the 1950s and 1970s. The exterior shows a single nave, a narrower choir with a polygonal end and buttresses added after 1616. Inside, the nave has two bays with ribbed vaulting and round keystones. A wooden gallery from 1687 by Wolf Hofler carries paintings of the apostles. The Gothic choir has a five-sided apse with ribbed vaulting on corbels and three pointed windows, one of which contains a 15th-century head of Christ in glass. The high altar combines 1948 craftsmanship with older figures, including a Madonna and Child from about 1480. The two side altars date from 1669 and the organ case from 1912.
