Meilenstein

The Meilenstein in Dorfgastein is a small historic monument in the Salzburg region of Austria. It stands at the north-western edge of the Römerplatz, marking where the old Gasteiner Reichsstraße once ran. Built in the 19th century, it served travellers along this important route through the Hohe Tauern mountains. The stone carries inscriptions that once guided road users. One side shows the milestone number and route name for those arriving from Wildgastein. The opposite face bears another inscription, and the layout of the faces reveals how the stone was originally positioned at the roadside. Experts believe the figure ‘35,0’ may have been added later as a kilometre marker, similar to a ‘45,0’ found on a related stone in Bad Hofgastein. Visitors to Dorfgastein can see the milestone where it has stood for generations. The Römerplatz is a quiet spot near the village centre, with views of the surrounding alpine landscape. The stone itself is small but clearly marked, offering a glimpse of how roads were measured and marked in the past. Its preservation underlines the town’s respect for local heritage.
