Blockheide
The Blockheide is an exposed granite outcrop and protected area near Gmünd in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria. It features large granite blocks scattered across the landscape, some of which are rocking stones that can be gently moved. The site is part of the Blockheide-Eibenstein Nature Park, which spans a varied terrain of heather-covered meadows, mixed woods with Scots pines, small lakes and cultivated fields. The nature park is recognised for its unique geological formations and diverse flora. Heather blooms in late summer, painting the landscape in shades of purple. Scots pines rise among the granite blocks, their trunks twisted by the wind. Small lakes reflect the sky and add to the serene atmosphere of the park. Visitors find marked paths winding through the granite landscape, leading past the rocking stones and through the heather meadows. Wooden viewing platforms offer vantage points over the lakes and surrounding woods. Interpretive signs explain the geology and ecology of the area. The park provides a quiet retreat where the interplay of rock, water and vegetation can be fully appreciated.
