The Bilstein is a wooded hill just over 460 metres high in the Langenberge ridge, part of the Habichtswälder Bergland near Kassel. It stands between the villages of Besse to the south-east and Ermetheis to the north-west, with the smaller Bensberg only 650 metres away. The hill slopes gently south towards the Kammerberg at 360.8 metres, while to the west the land falls away to the Fritzlarer Börde.

The remains of an Iron-Age ring-wall cover about 2.8 hectares just south-west of the summit. A rocky outcrop south-east of the top offers cliffs and an outlook with a small shelter, giving wide views east and south-east. The Löwenweg trail, running from Warburg to Alsfeld, passes through this section of the ridge.

On the lower, open east and south-east slopes lie the hamlets Am Battberg and Zum Rainsborn, both belonging to Besse. Below them sits the Bilstein car park, the usual starting point for walks to the top. From the summit the eye follows the wooded Langenberge stretching away in long ridges.
