Wildeneck castle ruins

The ruins of Wildeneck stand on a steep spur above the western shore of Irrsee in Upper Austria. Built in the 12th century by Rapoto I of Ortenburg, it once commanded views across Mondsee and the Kolomansberg slopes. By the late 16th century the castle had been abandoned, leaving only fragments of its enclosing walls and a deep neck ditch. Wildeneck’s history shows how power shifted between Bavarian dukes, Salzburg archbishops and local monasteries. After Rapoto IV sold it in 1286, the castle became a pawn in disputes over the Mondsee region. Peasant revolts in the 17th century arose from heavy dues and double lordship, ending only after the 1779 Treaty of Teschen placed the area under Austrian rule. Today a steep path from the Fischhof inn leads up to the remains. Visitors see scant masonry, hints of collapsed vaults and the hollow of the former neck ditch. The forty-five-minute climb is marketed as a family adventure, while the local tale of the Wildeneck countess’s golden coach recalls the harsh contrast between wealth and hardship.
