Magdalensee

The Magdalensee is a small lake of 14 hectares in Carinthia, set in a shallow hollow southwest of a gravel terrace. It lies entirely within the boundaries of Villach and receives water only from underground springs. Its catchment area covers just 0,6 square kilometres, and the water renews itself every 3,6 months. Twelve kinds of fish swim in the clear water, including barbel, grass carp, perch, bream, pike, carp, bleak, roach, rudd, tench, and wels catfish. Originally eels and zander also lived here, but they no longer appear in the lake. Paths run along the shore past the Villacher district of St. Magdalen, where visitors can watch water birds and dragonflies over the reeds. The quiet surroundings offer a place to sit beside the water and listen to the calls of coots and moorhens.
