Landskron Castle

Burg Landskron stands on a rocky outcrop above the Ossiach Tauern range, northeast of Villach in Carinthia. The ruins date from the early 14th century, perched at 658 metres above sea level. Below, Lake Ossiach stretches to the south-west, its waters reflecting the Tauern peaks. The castle once guarded a strategic route through the mountains. Nearby, a falconry centre offers daily flying displays of birds of prey. A macaque enclosure adds another attraction just a short walk away. The fortress has a long history tied to powerful families and rulers. It was first mentioned in 1351 when Duke Albert II of Austria bought it from the Bamberg prince-bishops. Later, Emperor Charles V stayed briefly in 1552 while fleeing Protestant forces. The Khevenhüller family turned it into a Renaissance residence before losing it in the Thirty Years’ War. A fire in 1812 left the castle in ruins, which were later stabilised. Visitors walk through the preserved ruins and enter the old castle walls. Inside, a restaurant serves meals with views over the valley. Outside, paths lead to the falconry displays where eagles and hawks circle overhead. The macaque enclosure nearby shows the animals in a natural setting. From the highest point, the panorama takes in Lake Ossiach and the surrounding mountains.
