Graz Highlands

The Graz Highlands rise north of Graz in the Austrian province of Styria. This low mountain range forms part of the Central Alps and marks the beginning of the Prealps east of the Mur. Geologically, areas on the Mur’s west bank belong to the Graz Highlands even though they stand apart from the main Styrian Prealps. The Passail Basin holds the core settlements, with the Semriach Basin to the southwest and the Teichalm region to the north. The Mur valley from Mixnitz to Graz bounds the range on the west, while valleys like Breitenauertal and Gasenbach define its northern edge. The Graz Highlands contain several notable peaks, each rising above 1,000 metres. The highest is the Hochlantsch at 1,720 metres, followed by the Osser at 1,548 metres and the Rote Wand at 1,505 metres. Other summits include the Schöckl at 1,445 metres, the Zetz at 1,274 metres, and the Röthelstein at 1,263 metres. Lower but still prominent are the Pleschkogel at 1,061 metres and the Hohe Rannach at 1,018 metres. The range also includes the Generalkogel and Eggenberg, both under 750 metres. Visitors find open meadows, dense forests, and rugged rock formations across the Graz Highlands. Well-marked paths lead through the Passail and Semriach basins, offering gentle walks and challenging climbs. The Teichalm region provides a quieter setting with its upland pastures and clear streams. From the summits, views stretch across Styria to the Alps and the Graz Basin. The contrast between the high peaks and the valleys below creates a varied landscape for hikers and nature lovers.
