Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse

The Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse stands in Northwich, Cheshire, on the A533 road. It occupies the former Northwich Union Workhouse, built in 1839 to enforce the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. The building was designed by George Latham to a standard model and later expanded with a fever hospital in 1850 and improved receiving wards in 1863. In 1948 it became an old people’s home until 1968, when most of the site was demolished. Only the original front range and a Board of Guardians room from 1892 remain today. The museum records the social, cultural and industrial history of West Cheshire, from Roman salt extraction to later chemical industries. It began as the Salt Museum in 1887, founded by salt proprietors Thomas Ward and John Brunner, who donated the collection to the town. After the original building collapsed due to mine subsidence, the collection moved to a new site in 1909 before relocating to Weaver Hall in 1981. The appointment of curator Matt Wheeler in 2004 led to special exhibitions such as one on Everest explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine in 2009. The museum was renamed in 2010 to reflect its broader focus on regional history. Inside, visitors find permanent displays including a Victorian workhouse schoolroom and the Board of Guardians boardroom. The museum holds over 8,000 images documenting west Cheshire’s salt and chemical industries and canal transport. Regular events include art exhibitions, talks and film shows in the Regalette mini-cinema. The surrounding area includes the Grade II listed building and the nearby former Lion Salt Works. The museum’s collections and programmes continue to attract thousands of visitors each year.
