Holy Trinity Church, Northwich

Holy Trinity Church stands on a small hill called Castle in the Castle district of Northwich, Cheshire. It is an active Anglican parish church built in the 19th century for workers on the Weaver Navigation. The church was one of three commissioned by the Weaver Navigation Trustees to provide Sunday services for their employees. The architect Edmund Sharpe of Lancaster designed all three churches. The foundation stone was laid in 1841 by Lord Tollemache, and the church was consecrated a year later. The sandstone used came from a quarry owner in Runcorn and Weston Point. The church is the largest of the three built for the Weaver Navigation Trustees, seating over 400 people. It is constructed in red sandstone with grey slate roofs in a Geometrical style. The plan includes a six-bay nave, a narrow chancel, and a slim tower with a broach spire at the west end. The tower has a west door, lancet windows in the middle stage, and traceried bell openings. Buttresses separate the bays along the sides, each containing a window with a circle above two lancets. Inside, a west gallery holds the organ on a cast iron arcade, while the pews, pulpit, and lectern are original painted wood. Visitors find stained glass windows, including a 1862 west window and a mid-20th-century window by Trena Cox depicting Saint Nicholas and Wenceslas. The two-manual organ was built in 1898 by Young of Manchester. The octagonal font and original fittings remain from the church’s construction. The surrounding area includes the Castle district, once the site of a small hill, offering a quiet setting for this historic church.
