Lahnsattel (Pass)

The Lahn Saddle is a high mountain pass in the Austrian Alps, standing at 1,006 metres above sea level. It lies between Lower Austria and Styria, linking the Salza river valley near Mariazell with the Mürz river valley. The pass is crossed by Federal Highway B 23, which climbs steeply on both sides. The southeast side reaches a maximum gradient of 11 percent, while the west side from Terz im Halltal rises as sharply as 17 percent. Three kilometres away rises the Göller massif, reaching 1,766 metres, with the Wildalpe to the south. The Lahn Saddle connects two historic valleys and serves as a key route for travellers crossing the Alps. It has long been a crossing point between Lower Austria and Styria, linking communities separated by rugged terrain. The steep grades reflect the engineering challenges of building a road through such a mountainous landscape. The nearby Göller massif and Wildalpe add to the scenic value of the route, drawing walkers and sightseers. Though small, the town of Lahnsattel lies just one kilometre east of the pass, though its population has declined by one fifth in recent decades. Visitors to the Lahn Saddle find a high, open pass with sweeping views across the surrounding mountains. The road itself is a striking feature, winding through steep slopes and offering a sense of the Alps’ scale. The nearby Göller massif provides a backdrop for hikers, while the Wildalpe offers quieter paths into the high country. The contrast between the busy road and the solitude of the peaks gives the pass a distinctive character. Even in decline, the town of Lahnsattel adds a touch of settlement to the wild landscape.
