Mürz

The Mürz is a river in the Austrian province of Styria. It starts where two smaller streams meet near the village of Kaltenbach, close to the border with Lower Austria. The river then flows through the town of Mürzzuschlag, where it is crossed by the Southern Railway line. A major highway, the Semmering Schnellstraße, runs alongside parts of the river. After winding through the landscape, the Mürz joins the Mur at Bruck an der Mur. The river’s length and the size of its drainage basin show how significant it is for the region. The Mürz stretches for 84 kilometres and drains an area of 1,505 square kilometres. Its waters shape the valley and support local ecosystems. The railway and road that follow its course connect towns and villages along the way. The point where it meets the Mur marks the end of its journey. Visitors to the Mürz can walk or cycle along its banks in many places. The riverbanks offer peaceful spots to observe wildlife and enjoy the scenery. The surrounding landscape includes forests and rolling hills typical of the Styrian countryside. The town of Mürzzuschlag provides access to the river and its paths.
