Betzenberg

The Betzenberg is a 285-metre hill just south of Kaiserslautern’s central station. It rises about 50 metres above the city and gives its name to the surrounding quarter. The hill’s southern edge merges into the Palatine Forest. The Betzenberg once lent its name to the city’s football stadium. Locals still call the ground ‘the Betze’. The hill overlooks the main railway line from Ludwigshafen to Saarbrücken. The quarter itself was planned in 1967. Parts of the former Palatinate Forest protected landscape were included to create space for housing. Only the area around the stadium was built earlier. The Betzenberg Wildlife Park lies within the quarter. Bremerhof sits on the southern edge as a local destination. Humberg Tower stands on the northern edge of the Palatine Forest Nature Park. A visitor finds the Fritz Walter Stadium at the foot of the hill. The wildlife park offers paths through native woodland. Bremerhof provides a small café and views across the Palatinate Forest. Humberg Tower gives a wide lookout over the city and the surrounding countryside. The hilltop itself is grassy and open, with benches for resting.
