Theodor-Zink-Museum

The Theodor-Zink-Museum stands in Kaiserslautern’s old town on Steinstraße, a converted 19th-century farmyard built by Johann Gelbert in 1817. The four-sided complex includes a half-hipped roof over a barrel-vaulted cellar, timber-framed stables and a large barn. Once a drovers’ inn called ‘Zum Rheinkreis’, it later housed a brewery and ice cellars before becoming a museum in the 1970s. The adjacent Wadgasserhof forms part of the site, and the whole ensemble is protected as a monument. The museum was founded in 1934 by local historian Theodor Zink, who had begun collecting objects in 1925. After donations from townspeople forced rapid growth, the collection moved to the former Spittelmühle, but wartime dispersal and later relocations led to today’s home. A major redesign in 2001 created a permanent city history display arranged as a chronological walk from the fifth millennium BC to the 20th century. Changing exhibitions complement the core holdings. Visitors follow a clear route through several rooms. The first covers the Middle Ages and early modern period, the next spans the 16th to 19th centuries, and the last presents local firms, wars and disasters. The barn regularly hosts readings and chamber concerts, while outside the old brewery sign and ice-cellar entrance recall the site’s earlier life.
