St. Georg (Timenitz)

The parish church of St George stands on a steep eastern slope above Timenitz, a clustered village in Magdalensberg, Carinthia. Built in 1217, it is a late-Gothic structure that was altered in the 19th century and restored several times, most recently in 1993. The church sits within a walled cemetery whose entrance arch bears a wavy Biedermeier gable. Below the hill the land falls away toward fields and distant hills. The church’s Gothic choir has buttresses and a narrow northern chapel built over an old ossuary. A tall tower with a pointed spire and Gothic louvred openings carries a 15th-century fresco of St Christopher on its south face. Inside, restored polychrome decoration and a wide west porch on Tuscan columns frame the entrance. The west wall shows blank quatrefoil panels above the porch, while the south wall of the nave contains a Roman stone bearing the epitaph of Gaius Viatorius, an officer buried at Virunum. Visitors walk up a paved path lined with cypresses to the cemetery gate. Inside the churchyard the view stretches across the Magdalensberg ridge. The west porch shelters a Gothic west door with original ironwork, while the blocked north door and the Roman stone add layers of history. The restored fresco and the crisp Gothic lines of the choir create a quiet space for reflection.
