Pfarrkirche hl. Margaretha, Magdalensberg

The parish church of St Margaret stands on the northern edge of Ottmanach village in the Magdalensberg municipality of Klagenfurt-Land district, Kärnten. Built under the patronage of St Margaret of Antioch, it belongs to the Tainach/Tinje deanery in the Gurk-Klagenfurt diocese and is listed as a protected monument. The church was first mentioned in 1134 and has been enlarged and altered many times since. In the 17th century the tower was rebuilt under parish priest Antonius Groschar, and the late-Gothic choir dates from the same period. The west portal, with its iron-bound door, received a columned porch in the mid-18th century. Inside, a late-Gothic star vault and two side aisles with place-ribbed vaults meet at the round-arched triumphal arch. The high altar of about 1720–30 shows St Margaret flanked by St Joachim and St Anne. Outside, a Roman-era architrave fragment serves as a step at the churchyard gate. A Roman tomb inscription for C. Iulius Bassus and C. Iulius Praesens is set into the south wall. Inside, the left side-altar’s mensa incorporates a Roman scribe relief from a tomb. The church’s stone-slated roofs and the half-round ossuary between tower and choir complete the view.
