Filialkirche St. Laurentius, Magdalensberg

The Filialkirche St. Laurentius stands in St. Lorenzen, a village in the Magdalensberg municipality of Carinthia. Built in the 13th century, it began as a Romanesque structure before Gothic elements were added in the 14th century. The church was remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries, and restored in 1994. Its exterior features a late-Gothic west tower with an eight-sided spire and pointed sound openings. A vaulted porch shelters the west door, which leads through a pointed arch into the tower basement. Inside, the nave was given a ribbed vault before 1889, and the choir retains a 5/8 apse with Gothic ribbed vaulting. Frescoes uncovered in 1994 show the Annunciation and Adoration, while the ceiling depicts the Ascension of St Lawrence. The high altar of the mid-19th century holds a statue of the saint between Baroque angels. The left side-altar carries a 19th-century painting of the Virgin teaching the child Jesus and a Villach workshop Madonna from 1520–25. The right side-altar displays a statue of St Oswald dated 1500–10 and a painted winged altarpiece with scenes of the Annunciation. A carved shrine from about 1500 shows St Lawrence on its central panel, with painted wings attributed to the Villach workshop.
