Burg Amtenhausen

Burg Amtenhausen stands on a steep slope high above the former Amtenhausen monastery, 830 metres above sea level. It is a hilltop earthwork built between the 8th and 11th centuries, not directly linked to the monastery founded in 1107. The site consists of a roughly 75-metre-long rampart and a ditch in front of it. Behind the rampart lies a 70-metre terrace cut into the hillside, with an artificial embankment inside the enclosed area. The earthworks show signs of careful construction designed to defend the ridge. Archaeologists have studied the site in detail, including work by Christoph Morrissey and Dieter Müller in 1999. Their research describes the layout of the wall and ditch as part of a wider pattern of medieval defences in the region. Earlier studies by Hans-Wilhelm Heine also discuss similar fortifications between the young Danube and western Lake Constance. Visitors reach the site along a quiet path from the Zimmern district of Immendingen. The remains are subtle: low earth banks and a shallow ditch mark the old defences. From the terrace, views stretch across the surrounding countryside. The isolation and the sense of an early medieval landscape make it a place where the past feels close at hand.
