Burg Darrendobel

Burg Darrendobel stands as the ruins of a spur castle about five kilometres north-west of Zimmern, a district of Immendingen in the Tuttlingen district of Baden-Württemberg. The hilltop ruin sits on a southern spur above the Ippinger Mill at roughly 875 metres above sea level. It was probably built between the 8th and 11th centuries as an early to high medieval rampart system on a curved, flat earthwork with two front ditches. Traces of the old walls and ditches still remain today. The best way to reach the site is via the Talhöfe farms near Zimmern. The site is worth visiting for anyone interested in early medieval fortifications. The surviving earthworks and ditches show how the builders used the natural slope to create a defensive position. Archaeologists have studied the layout and found evidence of a wall system that once enclosed the spur. Two books by Christoph Morrissey and Dieter Müller, and by Hans-Wilhelm Heine, describe the site in detail. The Landesdenkmalamt Baden-Württemberg has published these findings in its series on prehistoric and medieval defences. Visitors find a quiet spot with clear traces of the old ramparts and ditches. The surrounding woodland and open slopes give a sense of the castle’s strategic position. The path from Zimmern leads through farmland before climbing gently to the spur. From the ruin’s edge there are views over the valley towards the Ippinger Mill. The site is small but rewarding for those who appreciate early medieval engineering.
