Ehrenburg (Hausen)

The Ehrenburg stands on a narrow ridge above Geisingen, a small town in the Tuttlingen district of Baden-Württemberg. Built in the 8th to 11th centuries as an early medieval earthwork fortification, it once guarded a strategic spur of land. Today only grassy ramparts and shallow ditches remain, marking where the double-walled defences once stood. Archaeologists recognise two main lines of fortification. The main shield wall stretches about eighty metres along the north-western approach, its outer slope still rising a metre or two above the ditch. Flanking walls run along the sides of the spur but are much lower and harder to see. A forest track cuts through the northern rampart, following the spine of the ridge towards the open plateau beyond. Visitors walk a quiet woodland path to reach the site. From the car park near Hausen, a signed route leads uphill through beech and spruce. At the crest the ramparts curve away on either side, enclosing a flat triangular area once filled with timber buildings. On clear days the view stretches across the Danube valley to the Black Forest foothills.
