Line U6

The U6 is a metro line in Vienna running for 17.3 kilometres from Floridsdorf to Siebenhirten. It has 24 stations and connects to the U4 at Längenfeldgasse and Spittelau, and to the U3 at Westbahnhof. The first section opened in 1989 and the line reached its current length in 1996. Unlike other Vienna U-Bahn lines, the U6 uses overhead wires instead of a third rail because part of the route follows an elevated section of the former Vienna Stadtbahn. This elevated portion was too costly to rebuild for high-floor trains, so low-floor T-class vehicles were introduced instead. The line serves districts across the city, including Floridsdorf, Handelskai, Spittelau, Westbahnhof and Siebenhirten. Stations like Neue Donau, Alser Straße and Josefstädter Straße provide access to key areas and transport links. Some stations offer park-and-ride facilities, such as Spittelau, Perfektastraße and Siebenhirten. The route passes through both underground and elevated sections, giving passengers varied views of the city. It connects residential areas with major transport hubs and healthcare facilities like Michelbeuern-AKH. Travellers on the U6 experience a mix of underground tunnels and open-air sections, especially between stations like Nußdorfer Straße and Gumpendorfer Straße. The elevated parts provide views over the city, while the underground stretches offer quick access to deeper areas. The line links important places such as Westbahnhof, a major railway station, and Längenfeldgasse, where passengers can change to the U3. The journey reflects Vienna’s well-organised transport network and its history of adapting older infrastructure for modern use.
