Floridsdorfer Bad

The Floridsdorfer Bad stands in Vienna’s 21st district, Floridsdorf, on Franklinstraße. It is a municipal indoor swimming pool built after the Second World War. The building opened on 6 October 1967 with President Franz Jonas in attendance. Jonas had laid the foundation stone while he was mayor. The architect was Friedrich Florian Grünberger, who later designed seven more district indoor pools. The hall has a single large pool for swimming lanes. A separate teaching pool is used for swimming lessons. Changing rooms and showers surround the pool area on the ground floor. Upstairs a gallery runs around the pool, giving views down to the water. The roof is a shallow dome of glass and steel, letting in plenty of daylight. Visitors find a quiet place for a swim away from the busier city-centre pools. The entrance opens straight into the main pool hall. The teaching pool is quieter and ideal for beginners. The gallery above offers a place to watch swimmers or rest. Outside, the Franklinstraße entrance sits among residential streets. The building’s plain style fits the post-war years when it was built.
