Auchen Castle Hotel

Auchen Castle is a 19th-century country house near Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway. It stands on a 34-acre estate with Italian-inspired gardens and a private lake. The house has 26 bedrooms and a five-star rating from the Scottish tourist board. It began as a medieval castle built in 1220 by Sir Humphrey de Kirkpatrick. The Kirkpatrick family, allies of Robert the Bruce, once owned the estate before it passed to the Clan Johnstone. The present building reflects an Egyptian revival style, designed by General Johnstone after his service in Egypt in 1801. It includes unusual features such as Victorian water catchments and reservoirs still in use. The castle’s floor plan follows a symbolic design linked to the Battle of the Nile. Three wings form a triangle, and rooms at each corner share an octagonal window. The entrance has three steps and two Corinthian pillars, while a stepped pyramid garden leads to two sphinxes. Visitors find landscaped grounds with rare trees and plants collected over centuries. The medieval ruins of the original castle remain nearby as a Scheduled Monument. The hotel hosts celebrity weddings and has welcomed guests like the Beatles and Barbara Cartland. ITV’s Good Morning Britain broadcast four live weddings from the site in 2016. The architecture’s layered symbolism and historical importance make it a distinctive place to visit.
