Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum

The Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum occupies the old watch tower of the former RAF Dumfries, two miles north-east of Dumfries town centre. The control tower dates from the Second World War, when the airfield operated from June 1940 until 1957. After the war the site passed to private hands in 1960. The museum itself was founded in 1977 by a local group of enthusiasts and now houses aircraft, engines and artefacts in and around the three-storey tower. The collection includes military and civil machines, aero engines and memorabilia honouring airborne forces. Among notable exhibits are a salvaged Bristol Hercules engine from a crashed Vickers Wellington, a Bristol Centaurus from the experimental Blackburn B-20, and a Junkers Jumo 211 recovered from a Heinkel He 111 lost in the Galloway Hills. The museum also displays a Spitfire recovered in 1992 with help from the television programme Blue Peter, and a fully restored Spitfire Mk.IIa unveiled in 2017. Visitors enter the three-storey control tower to find displays on each floor. Outside stands a Westland Sea King helicopter. The exhibits include engines, propellers and wreckage alongside complete airframes such as a de Havilland Vampire and a Gloster Meteor. The site preserves the airfield’s wartime atmosphere while offering a growing collection of aviation history.
