Green Lane Masjid

Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre stands on a corner site in Green Lane, Small Heath, Birmingham. The complex includes separate prayer halls for men and women, a community hall, a madrasah, a library, a shop and accommodation. It also provides funeral services and runs a food bank for the local community. The building was originally a public library and baths designed by Martin & Chamberlain between 1893 and 1902. It is now a Grade II listed building in redbrick and terracotta Gothic-Jacobean style. The mosque came second in a 2007 national competition for the country’s ‘Model Mosque’. Its annual Eid al-Fitr celebration in Small Heath Park began in 2011 as an outdoor prayer organised by Green Lane Masjid and other local mosques. Attendance grew from 44,000 in 2014 to 100,000 in 2017. The mosque also runs charity projects such as care packages for Ramadan and a ‘plastic-free Ramadan’ campaign with ecobirmingham. In 2019 it raised an estimated £1 million in Ramadan donations for Syrian refugees and local iftars. Every Ramadan the mosque hosts Tarawih prayers attended by between 2,000 and 3,000 people each night. It organises a Winter Islamic Conference and other annual events with scholars discussing Fiqh, Aqeeda, Hadith and Quran. The surrounding area includes Small Heath Park where the large Eid gatherings take place. The building’s historic architecture and modern community services make it a notable landmark in Birmingham.
