Hochfirst Tower

The Hochfirst Tower is a 25-metre-high lattice observation tower on the Hochfirst mountain near Titisee-Neustadt. It stands at the edge of the Black Forest, a few kilometres from the small village of Saig. The tower replaced a wooden observation structure in 1890 and still serves as a landmark for walkers on the Freiburg–Lake Constance Black Forest Trail. Its metal framework rises above the surrounding forest, marking a clear point on the ridge. The site overlooks the Titisee-Neustadt valley and, on clear days, the distant Swiss Alps. The tower is worth the journey for its sweeping views from the top observation deck. The corrugated metal staircase winds upward in wide, shallow steps, making the climb manageable for most visitors. Once at the summit, the panorama includes the calm waters of the Titisee lake and the rolling hills of the Black Forest. The tower also supports directional radio and mobile phone services, though these do not interfere with its use as an observation point. Reinforcements have been added to keep the structure steady in the valley winds that sweep across the ridge. A visitor finds a sturdy metal tower with several open observation decks connected by a winding staircase. The top deck offers an unbroken view of the valley below and the distant mountain ranges. The surrounding forest is dense with spruce and fir, typical of the Black Forest’s high ground. The nearby village of Saig provides a quiet base for those who wish to explore the area on foot. The tower’s lattice design allows the wind to pass through, reducing strain on the structure during storms.
