Sgùrr Mòr

Sgùrr Mòr stands in the Fannichs, a chain of nine Munros in the northern Highlands between Loch Fannich and the A835 road to Ullapool. The mountain is the range’s highest point and rises above a quiet glen where few buildings stand. Its slopes are mostly gentle, making it one of the more accessible Munros for walkers. The area is remote, with only scattered homes and open moorland around the loch and road. Climbers usually tackle the group together or in one long day on the hills. The Fannichs attract those who want wild scenery without extreme scrambling. Loch Fannich itself is a long, narrow sheet of water surrounded by birch and pine woods. The private road beside the loch gives a gentler start to the ascent, though a bicycle or special permission helps. From the A835 side the route is longer but still straightforward, with long views across the glen. On the summit a broad plateau offers wide views over the Fannichs and beyond. Ben Wyvis and other peaks appear on clear days, while the loch below reflects the hills in calm weather. The slopes are covered in heather and grass, with rocky outcrops near the top. Walkers often pause here to eat and take in the quiet of this remote Highland landscape.
