Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich

Beinn Liath Mhòr Fannaich is a broad, bulky mountain in the Fannich range of the Scottish Highlands. It stands about fifty kilometres northwest of Inverness and reaches 954 metres at its highest point. The mountain’s Gaelic name means ‘great grey mountain of Fannich’. Unlike its neighbour Sgùrr Mòr, which shows a clear summit cone, Beinn Liath Mhòr Fannaich has a wide east–west plateau with the highest point marked by a cairn at the western end. Walkers often include the peak in a round tour of several Munros in the Fannich chain. The usual route starts at a car park beside Torrandhu Bridge on the A835. From there the ascent follows unnamed burns up the eastern slopes to the mountain’s east ridge and then to the summit. Many climbers continue over the southwest ridge to the higher summit of Sgùrr Mòr before completing the circuit. An alternative start is at Fannich Lodge beside Loch Fannich, reached by a private track suitable only for mountain bikes. From the summit plateau two east-running ridges extend parallel to each other, while a third ridge first heads north before turning east. The southernmost ridge ends at the 756-metre subsidiary top Creag Dubh Fannaich. The other two ridges enclose Coire Gorm, a steep corrie whose southern side is rocky. The mountain’s southeast flank is gentler, formed by grassy slopes that drop into the small Loch Lì.
