Winston Theatre

The Winston Theatre is a traditional proscenium arch theatre inside the Bristol Students' Union building on Queens Road in Clifton. It forms part of one of the largest students' union buildings in Great Britain. The theatre seats 204, with extra spaces for staff and wheelchair users. It has an orchestra pit, fly galleries with winchable lighting bars and hemp bars, a control room, a front-of-house sound location, two dressing rooms, and a rear sliding scenery dock door. The building itself was constructed in the 1960s to accommodate a growing university population. The theatre is worth visiting for its role in student culture and its links to notable figures. Since 2004 it has hosted the UK National Student Film Festival, Screentest, attended by guests such as BAFTA winner Luis Cook, director Ken Loach, actress Emily Watson, screenwriter David Nicholls, and BAFTA chairman Duncan Kenworthy. In 2009 it saw the first UK amateur production of Footloose by Music Theatre Bristol. The Stage Technicians' Association, a student society, operates the theatre daily and worked with the Union and specialist contractors to refurbish it between 2013 and 2015. Visitors find a working theatre with modern technical facilities alongside its traditional features. The auditorium seats over two hundred, with clear sightlines from most positions. The fly galleries allow lighting bars to be raised and lowered, while the control room manages sound and stage effects. Two dressing rooms serve performers, and the disused rear dock door hints at the theatre’s adaptable layout. The building sits in the heart of Clifton, close to the University of Bristol campus, making it an accessible cultural venue within a lively student area.
