Royal West of England Academy

The Royal West of England Academy stands in Clifton, Bristol, near the junction of Queens Road and Whiteladies Road. It occupies a Grade II* listed building, the city’s first public art gallery, opened in 1858. The gallery hosts five exhibition spaces and presents historic and contemporary British art. Its origins lie with Ellen Sharples, who secured funds from benefactors including Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Prince Albert. The Bristol Society of Artists, led by figures such as William James Müller and Francis Danby, formed the academy’s early core. In 1913 King George V granted the Royal title, and a major extension with a dome and Walter Crane lunettes was completed by 1914. The academy is governed by professional artists, with around 150 Academicians elected by their peers. Its collection includes works by artists from the Newlyn, St Ives and Bloomsbury Schools, alongside artists such as Elizabeth Blackadder, Mary Fedden and David Inshaw. The building’s interiors were designed by Charles Underwood, with a facade by JR Hirst altered in 1912 by SS Reay and H Dare Bryan. The first floor features paired Corinthian pilasters, shell-head niches and statues of Flaxman and Reynolds. A large carving of the three graces crowns the parapet, and the interior includes coloured marble and a replica of the Parthenon Frieze. Visitors find five galleries arranged across the Grade II* listed building. The president is the artist Hamish Young PRWA, and the director is Ren Renwick. The academy’s programme balances historic and contemporary works, offering a view of British art’s development. The building itself reflects 19th-century ambitions for public art and education. Its grand interiors and classical details provide a fitting setting for the exhibitions within.
