Cabot Tower

Cabot Tower stands on Brandon Hill in central Bristol, a red-sandstone landmark set in a public park between the city centre, Clifton and Hotwells. The tower was built in the 1890s to mark the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s voyage from Bristol to North America. Its design mixes cream Bath Stone details with flying buttresses and a small spirelet topped by a ball finial. The Marquis of Dufferin and Ava laid the foundation stone in June 1897 and opened the completed tower the following September. Public access to the viewing platforms was closed from 2007 until repairs finished in 2011, after which a Morse-code light was restored in 2014. The tower commemorates Cabot’s departure from Bristol in the Matthew with a Bristol crew and royal letters patent from Henry VII. Three plaques at its base record the 1897 foundation, the names of the organising committee, and a Peace Society hope for friendship between Britain and America. The inscription also notes the tower was raised by public subscription during Queen Victoria’s 61st year. The spiral staircase leads to two iron-railed balconies offering views over the city and beyond. The upper platform sits about 102 metres above sea level, giving wide vistas across Bristol. Brandon Hill itself was once home to a medieval chapel linked to St James’ Priory before a 16th-century windmill took its place. The tower’s diagonal buttresses support its weight while the spirelet crowns a winged figure symbolising commerce. Visitors find a quiet green space around the base, benches for resting, and clear paths winding up the hill. From the top, landmarks such as Clifton Suspension Bridge and the city docks can be seen on clear days. The restored Morse light flashes the tower’s name in code after dark, adding a distinctive night-time feature.
