River Ogmore

The River Ogmore winds through South Wales, rising high in the Ogmore Valley near Craig Ogwr and flowing south past towns like Bridgend and Ogmore. Its two main headwaters, the Ogwr Fawr and Ogwr Fach, join at Blackmill before the river continues toward its estuary between Ogmore-by-Sea and the Merthyr Mawr sand-dunes. Along the way it gathers tributaries such as the Llynfi, Garw and Ewenny, each carving its own valley through the landscape. The river’s course once meandered widely, but 19th-century urban growth narrowed much of it behind concrete flood walls. Despite this, the Ogmore remains a living waterway, shaped by glacial drift and fluvial gravels in its upper reaches. The river’s recovery shows in its wildlife. After decades of industrial damage, the water now supports healthy populations of aquatic invertebrates and returning fish. Salmon and sea trout have reappeared since the 1980s, though the Llynfi tributary still lags behind. Brown trout thrive in cleaner tributaries, while eels, gudgeon, stone loach and minnows are found throughout. A 2023 clean-up removed two thousand tyres and thirty-two trolleys from the riverbed, led by volunteers and supported by fifty partners. Near the estuary, a sewage treatment plant built in 1974 improved water quality, though heavy rain still causes occasional overflows. Visitors follow the river through broad valleys and past former mining towns. Anglers cast lines where trout and salmon now run, while walkers trace paths along the Ewenny tributary through Pencoed and Coychurch. At the estuary, sand-dunes stretch toward Ogmore Castle, standing above the point where the Ogmore meets the sea. The river’s banks show both scars of industry and signs of renewal, offering a landscape shaped by water, time and human effort.
