Pebyll (carnedd)

Pebyll is a Bronze Age ring cairn in Glyncorrwg, Neath Port Talbot. It stands on a low rise in open moorland near the Afon Corrwg. The site is marked on Ordnance Survey maps simply as ‘Cairn’. Cadw has listed it as a scheduled ancient monument with reference GM330. Ring cairns were built by the Celts to mark special places for ceremonies or to remember the dead. They differ from stone circles, which belong to a different period. The cairn shows how Bronze Age communities organised their ritual landscape. Its circular bank of stones encloses a small platform where gatherings once took place. The builders placed the stones without mortar, relying on careful stacking. The site was probably used for seasonal rites or communal gatherings rather than daily life. Its preservation allows archaeologists to study early Welsh burial and ceremonial practices. Visitors reach the cairn by following a farm track to the moorland edge. The walk offers wide views over the Afon Corrwg valley and surrounding hills. The stones stand low to the ground, forming a gentle circle about ten metres across. The setting is quiet, with only the wind and birdsong breaking the silence. The cairn blends into the rough grass and heather, yet its shape is clear once seen close up.
