Balvenie distillery

Balvenie distillery stands beside Balvenie Castle in Dufftown, Moray. The site began as an 18th-century mansion before William Grant turned it into a whisky works in 1893. Grant learned distilling at Mortlach and chose the field near the castle for his own distillery. The first still ran on 1 May 1893, and Grant stayed active until his death in 1923. Today the distillery remains in family hands under William Grant & Sons. The distillery is worth the journey for its rare craft traditions. It is one of only seven in Scotland with its own malting floor, where barley is still floor-malted. All five rare crafts—growing barley, malting, coppersmithing, coopering and malt mastering—happen on site. David Stewart MBE, the former Malt Master, pioneered wood finishing in 1962, maturing whisky in two cask types for deeper flavour. His innovations have earned awards, including a 2016 MBE for services to Scotch whisky. Inside, visitors find the stillhouse and tun room where traditional batch distillation takes place. The cooperage repairs and seasons casks for maturation. The maltings floor shows barley being turned by hand as in the 19th century. Outside, the old mansion’s stone walls frame views across the barley fields to the River Deveron. The craftsmanship and quiet rhythms of the distillery offer a clear picture of how single malt whisky is still made.
