Glenfiddich Distillery

Glenfiddich is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Dufftown, Moray. It stands beside the River Fiddich in a valley once frequented by deer, a fact reflected in its stag logo. The distillery was founded in 1886 by William Grant and filled its first casks on Christmas Day 1887. Today the site includes 43 small copper pot stills shaped like swan necks, all handmade and maintained on site. Water for the whisky comes from the nearby Robbie Dhu springs. Glenfiddich is part of Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail, a route linking seven working distilleries. The distillery helped shape the modern single malt category. In the 1920s it increased production during American prohibition, then in the 1960s launched single malt as a premium product. Its triangular bottle, introduced in 1956, became a familiar sight worldwide. Glenfiddich now sells in 180 countries and accounts for about 35% of global single malt sales. The brand has also supported artists, writers and Scottish achievers through dedicated awards programmes. Recent innovations include converting delivery trucks to run on biogas made from distillery waste. Visitors find a working distillery with a visitors’ centre and cooperage where casks are still made by hand. The core range includes 12, 15, 18 and 21-year-old expressions, each matured in different casks such as Caribbean rum, American bourbon or Spanish sherry butts. The site’s bottling hall fills thousands of bottles daily, while the Malt Whisky Trail links it to other distilleries and a cooperage museum. The valley setting and the rhythmic sounds of the stills give the place a quiet, purposeful atmosphere.
