St Edward's School

St Edward’s School stands on a hundred-acre site in Summertown, a northern district of Oxford. Its main buildings, arranged around a Quadrangle, sit on one side of Woodstock Road with playing fields on the other. The oldest parts date from the 1870s and 1880s, designed by architect William Wilkinson. Wilkinson’s chapel, built in 1876, remains a focal point of the campus. The school began in 1863 in central Oxford before moving to its present grounds under Warden A. B. Simeon. Today the site still shows the original layout of farmland turned into playing fields and quadrangles. The school’s sporting reputation has grown since the 19th century. Its boat club has won the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley five times, the most of any British school except Eton and St Paul’s. In 2023 it became the first co-educational school to win Championship gold for both boys’ and girls’ crews in the same National Schools’ Regatta. During the Second World War the school supplied many Royal Air Force officers, earning a stained-glass window from the RAF. Former Warden Henry Ewing Kendall guided the school for twenty-nine years and helped expand its academic and sporting facilities. Visitors find a mix of historic and modern buildings. The 1881 east range houses Big School and the library, while the 2020 Quad development added a new library, academic centre and hall. The North Wall Arts Centre, opened in 2007, occupies the site of the old school swimming pool and hosts theatre productions. The Martyrs Pavilion, designed by John Pawson, opened in 2009 and won an Oxford Preservation Trust award. The chapel’s stained glass and the Wilkinson-designed quadrangle show the school’s Victorian origins. Sports fields stretch over ninety acres across North Oxford, offering space for rugby, cricket, rowing and more.
