Oxford Centre for Mission Studies

The Oxford Centre for Mission Studies stands in a former Gothic Revival church on Woodstock Road, opposite Leckford Road. Built between 1860 and 1862 by George Edmund Street, it was consecrated in 1862 by Bishop Samuel Wilberforce. The tower and spire were added two years later. The building is Grade I listed and now houses a centre founded in 1983 by Rev. Vinay Samuel. It provides education for church leaders from Africa, Asia and Latin America. The centre offers Masters courses and research degrees validated by Middlesex University. Many Oxford faculty members supervise PhD and MPhil students here. It is linked to the University of Oxford through the Bodleian Libraries. The institution is a charity dedicated to training mission theologians. Its founders came from non-Western churches to shape its mission. Visitors find a Grade I listed church with Gothic Revival features. The tower and spire rise above Woodstock Road. Church Walk, a pedestrian path, runs south of the building. The former vicarage, designed by Harry Drinkwater, stands nearby as a Grade II listed structure. It now belongs to St Antony’s College. The surroundings include quiet streets and historic architecture.
