Wolfson College

Wolfson College stands beside the River Cherwell in north Oxford. It is one of the University of Oxford’s graduate colleges, specialising in global health, environmental studies, economics and the humanities. The college began in 1965 as Iffley College, with support from twelve other Oxford colleges, and became Wolfson College after receiving grants from the Wolfson Foundation and Ford Foundation. Sir Isaiah Berlin, a historian and philosopher, served as its first president and shaped its egalitarian ethos. Berlin envisaged a college that was ‘new, untrammelled and unpyramided’, with fewer traditional barriers between students and fellows. Under his leadership, Wolfson attracted distinguished fellows such as Niko Tinbergen, who won a Nobel Prize in 1973. The college is recognised for its modern main building, designed by Powell and Moya Architects and completed in 1974. The building contains three quadrangles: the Berlin Quad, the Tree Quad and the River Quad, which includes a diverted stretch of the Cherwell forming a punt harbour. Student accommodation is spread across the main building, family courtyards and purpose-built blocks such as the Robin Gandy Buildings. The college also owns an adjacent house and orchard formerly used by the Bishop of Oxford. Wolfson aims to be carbon neutral by 2030, having replaced gas boilers with heat-pumps and installed triple-glazed windows. Inside the main building, the library occupies two floors of one wing, with the main collection on the first floor and two named rooms on the ground floor. The common room has two levels, including a terrace overlooking the punting harbour, while the dining hall features a common table. Outside, the gardens include mature trees, a greenhouse and a riverside sundial. The college maintains a squash court, croquet lawn and its own punting fleet. Graduate students at Wolfson study across a wide range of programmes and research clusters, from ancient world studies to quantum foundations.
