Darul Amaan Mosque

The Darul Amaan Mosque stands in Hulme, just south of Manchester’s city centre. Built in 2012, it replaced an earlier temporary site and now serves the local Ahmadiyya Muslim community. The mosque sits within walking distance of the University of Manchester’s South Campus, making it a familiar landmark for students and staff. Its land was purchased by the community in 1991 after years of fundraising and planning. The building cost over a million pounds to construct and was completed in a single phase. The mosque’s inauguration drew over 1,500 guests and dignitaries. Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, performed the opening ceremony in April 2012. The design follows a gold-and-white colour scheme, with Arabic calligraphy adorning the exterior walls. Three domes crown the structure, the largest at the centre bearing a verse from the Quran. A smaller minaret rises on the left side, completing the skyline. Inside, two large prayer halls accommodate around 1,300 worshippers at once. The halls are divided for men and women, reflecting the community’s needs. Beyond worship, the complex includes two multi-purpose halls, offices, a library, a kitchen, and guest rooms. Visitors often remark on the calm atmosphere and the careful balance between modern construction and traditional Islamic art. The mosque’s location and facilities make it a focal point for both religious and social life in Hulme.
