Alliance Manchester Business School
Alliance Manchester Business School stands on Oxford Road in the city centre, part of the University of Manchester. It occupies modern and historic buildings that once belonged to two separate institutions: the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST. The school’s roots go back to 1918, when Manchester Municipal College of Technology created a Department of Industrial Administration. In the 1930s it became one of the first UK schools to offer postgraduate management programmes. The Robbins and Franks reports in the 1960s led to its formal establishment as one of the country’s first two university business schools. Its reputation rests on strong rankings and triple accreditation. The Financial Times 2018 Global MBA Ranking placed the MBA 10th in Europe and 36th worldwide. Specialist masters programmes also score highly: Business Analytics ranks 6th globally, International Business and Management 20th, and Finance 18th. The school runs a hands-on teaching method called the Manchester Method and offers mentoring through the Manchester Gold programme. Over three-quarters of students come from outside the UK, making it the largest campus-based business school in the country. Visitors find a blend of new and older buildings along Oxford Road. Inside, lecture theatres and seminar rooms support undergraduate, postgraduate and executive programmes. The school’s advisory board includes leading figures such as Tony De Nunzio, and its PhD programme has been ranked first in the world. Global MBA students can study at centres in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai while remaining enrolled in Manchester. The campus reflects the school’s long history of innovation in management education.
