Manchester Museum

Manchester Museum stands on Oxford Road in Manchester, part of the University of Manchester’s neo-Gothic campus. It holds about 4.5 million items from every continent, making it the UK’s largest university museum. Around 650,000 visitors come each year to see its archaeology, anthropology and natural history collections. The building itself dates from 1888, designed by Alfred Waterhouse after earlier collections were moved from Peter Street. Two later extensions in 1912 and 1927 added space for Egyptology and ethnography. The Gothic Revival frontage links to Whitworth Hall and blends with the university’s historic architecture. The museum is worth visiting for its wide-ranging displays and recent redevelopment. A £13.5 million project added a two-storey extension and new galleries such as the South Asia Gallery. This is the first permanent UK space dedicated to South Asian stories and contributions. The Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery and a large Exhibition Hall also opened after the work. The redevelopment drew 52,000 visitors in its first week when it reopened in 2023. Earlier, a £12.5 million refurbishment in 2003 created the Fossils Gallery and Living Cultures Galleries. The museum’s collections have grown since its start in 1821 with the Manchester Society of Natural History. Visitors find several themed galleries and special displays. The Manchester Gallery shows how the city connects to the wider world and examines colonial links. Living Worlds explores attitudes to nature with exhibits like a crane from Hiroshima and an allotment tended by volunteers. Ancient Worlds covers archaeology with facial reconstructions and Egyptian artefacts, including a moving statue that once spun on a shelf. Nature’s Library presents natural history in a Gothic library setting, while Stan the Tyrannosaurus rex greets guests near the entrance. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and artist projects, adding fresh perspectives to its long-standing collections.
