Schloss Aulendorf

Schloss Aulendorf stands on a hill above the Schussen river, overlooking the town. The complex grew over centuries and now shows five architectural styles from the 12th to the 19th. The oldest parts belong to a medieval castle, while the town side displays a grand classical façade crowned by a copper coat of arms. The castle chapel is directly attached to the Catholic parish church of St Martin, making the ensemble unique. The building’s long history is matched by its rescue story. After decades of neglect and damage from dry rot, the state of Baden-Württemberg took over in 1987. Restoration began in 1992, stabilising the structure and revealing layers of past centuries. The Landesmuseum Württemberg once used parts of the building for a branch museum, and the town council now meets in a 19th-century wing. Visitors walk through rooms where each era speaks through its own details. The Marmorsaal shows elaborate stucco with depictions of the four elements and the seasons. The Musiksalon retains original wallpapers from around 1800 and allegorical ceiling paintings. A café occupies the basement, while the upper floors offer views across the town and river valley.
