Willesden Jewish Cemetery

Willesden Jewish Cemetery stands on Beaconsfield Road in the London Borough of Brent. Opened in 1873, it is the first cemetery created by the United Synagogue after its establishment by Act of Parliament. The grounds were designed by Nathan Solomon Joseph in English Gothic style, with funerary buildings completed in the 19th century. Historic England recognises its Grade II listing for its design, the quality of its monuments, and the influence of those buried there. It is also one of London’s Magnificent Seven cemeteries, often compared to the Rolls-Royce among them. The cemetery holds nearly 30,000 graves, including four Grade II-listed monuments. Among those buried here are Rosalind Franklin, who helped discover DNA’s structure, and Nathan Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild. In 2015, a National Lottery grant supported restoration and the creation of a visitor centre and permanent exhibition. Since 2020, the House of Life project has offered walking tours, an online literary festival, and public outreach events. In 2026, it was named a significant cemetery by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe. Visitors find a landscape of Gothic funerary buildings and varied monuments reflecting both Jewish and English traditions. A Grade II-listed obelisk commemorates 110 Commonwealth war graves from both world wars, including that of Conservative politician Dudley Joel. The Rothschild family’s destroyed mausoleum is marked by surviving tombs, and Max Eberstadt’s tomb was designed by Edward Burne-Jones. The cemetery remains largely intact, with clear records of its expansion in 1890, 1906, and between 1925 and 1926.
