Croft Moraig

Croft Moraig is a prehistoric stone circle in Perth and Kinross, four miles southwest of Aberfeldy. It stands beside the A827 road between Aberfeldy and Kenmore, close to Loch Tay with steep mountains rising behind. The site is a scheduled monument, protected for its importance. Dark grey schist stones form the circle, typical of local stone circles. A recumbent stone and graded circle-stones mark it out from other circles in the area. The circle was built in three phases, starting around 2000 BC. First came fourteen timber posts in a horseshoe, with a central boulder and burnt bone. These were replaced by eight standing stones in a smaller horseshoe, surrounded by a stone bank. A two-metre stone with 23 cup marks stood on the bank. Finally, twelve standing stones formed an outer circle twelve metres wide, with an entrance marked by two stones and two graves nearby. Visitors find a quiet grassy space beside the road, with the circle of stones clearly arranged. The graded stones slope gently towards the recumbent stone, which lies flat. Cup-marked stones and the remains of the bank can still be seen. The setting under steep mountains gives views across to Loch Tay. The site feels remote despite the nearby road, offering a glimpse of Bronze Age ritual practice.
