Taymouth Castle

Taymouth Castle stands on the south bank of the River Tay, about a mile from Loch Tay in Perth and Kinross. It occupies a 450-acre estate bordered by mountain ranges, the loch and the confluence of the Lyon and Tay rivers. The site once held Balloch Castle, built in 1552 for the Campbells, which was demolished in the early 19th century to make way for the present neo-Gothic castle. Its blue-grey stone came from Bolfracks quarry, and the interior features work by Francis Bernasconi on the central staircase and ceilings painted by Cornelius Dixon. The castle’s public rooms still display 19th-century plasterwork, murals, medieval stained glass and Renaissance woodwork. Historic Environment Scotland has graded the building ‘outstanding’ for art, history, architecture and scenery, noting its pinetum and veteran trees. The castle is one of Scotland’s most important in private hands, with interiors that survive largely intact. The estate includes listed structures such as a ruined circular tower known as the Rock Lodge, Apollo’s Temple, Maxwell’s Temple and a historic dairy made of quartz that Queen Victoria visited in 1842. Taymouth Castle Golf Club’s 18-hole course, designed by James Braid in 1925, is being extended and remodelled to add views of the River Tay. The estate also offers 2.5 miles of salmon fishing on the River Tay and rights on Loch Tay for pike, perch, roach and trout. Visitors find a landscape shaped by the Campbells of Breadalbane, who owned the estate for centuries. The family’s power grew from the 15th century, when King James III granted them lands for capturing an assassin. Their titles included Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, and by the 20th century the line reached Marquess. The Black Book of Taymouth, compiled between 1598 and 1648 and published in 1855, records the history of the Central Highlands. Today the castle’s grounds include parklands, woodlands and surviving follies, set against the Grampian Mountains.
