Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Manchester

The Church of the Holy Name of Jesus stands on Oxford Road in Manchester, a Gothic Revival building designed by Joseph A. Hansom with his son Joseph Stanislaus. Built between 1869 and 1871, it replaced an earlier temporary church and became the largest church in the city. The tower, added in 1928, honours Fr Bernard Vaughan, SJ, and the church holds Grade I listing. Its brick structure is clad in Warwick stone, with a nave that can seat 800 worshippers. The interior follows counter-Reformation principles, with a raised altar, slender pillars and a terracotta roof. The church’s history reflects Manchester’s growth and the Jesuits’ mission. Bishop William Turner invited the Jesuits in 1860 to serve the expanding Irish immigrant population and the rising middle class. Fr Bernard Vaughan, rector from 1888 to 1901, engaged in public debates with the Anglican Bishop of Manchester. The church’s scale and design reinforced Jesuit influence and Catholic confidence in industrial England. Nikolaus Pevsner praised it as a work of “very highest quality and originality.” Inside, visitors find a nave dominated by the organ at the west end, rebuilt in 1926 and restored in 2004. The pulpit features a mosaic of the English Martyrs, and confessionals line the north side, each with a fireplace. Small chapels and Stations of the Cross adorn the south and west walls. The church hosts daily Mass, weekday services timed for students, and noon exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with confessions. Its music programme includes Gregorian chant, polyphony and student-led concerts, drawing on the nearby university and music college.
