The Manchester Academy is a group of four concert venues on the University of Manchester campus in North West England. Two buildings house them: the 1957 Students’ Union and the 1990 academy extension. Academy 1 stands alone south of the original building, while Academy 2, 3 and Club Academy occupy floors of the older structure. The venues began as a jazz hall in 1963 and grew into major live-music stages after a 1990 rebuild. A 2007–2008 refurbishment enlarged capacities and added green features.

The venues have hosted thousands of gigs and many famous acts since Humphrey Lyttelton’s 1963 show. Academy 1 now holds 2 600 people, making it one of Manchester’s largest stages. Academy 2 started as a jazz room in 1963 and still books live music. Academy 3 began as a pub room and remains the smallest. Club Academy sits in the basement and grew after another campus venue closed. The 2007 rebuild won awards for sustainability and accessibility.

Visitors find wide foyers, bars and VIP areas in the rebuilt spaces. Academy 1’s large hall fills quickly for headline acts. Academy 2’s first-floor room keeps its original character while hosting gigs. Academy 3’s second-floor space offers an intimate setting. Club Academy’s basement venue books club nights and smaller bands. The campus setting gives students and visitors easy access to drinks and transport.
