Pfarrkirche Mariae Himmelfahrt

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary stands on a rocky outcrop above a bend in the Lieser river at Lieseregg, a hamlet in Seeboden on the Millstätter See. Built as a fortified church in the late 15th century, it was enlarged in the 17th century with a new western nave and a southern aisle. The church and its adjoining presbytery remain protected monuments. Inside, the nave has three eastern bays covered by rich net-ribbed vaults on half-round responds, while the western bay is a plain barrel vault. The tower on the south side contains a late medieval sacristy reached through a pointed arch portal with a straight lintel. A Christopherus fresco, uncovered in 1999, decorates the tower’s outer wall, and the north choir wall bears late Gothic frescoes of the Crucifixion and Saint Peter. The high altar’s painting of the Assumption is a 19th-century copy after Rubens. Three medieval bells hang in the tower, including one cast by Ambros Basler in the 14th century. Outside the west wall, four carved tombstones record the 15th- and 16th-century priests and nobles of the parish.
