Evangelische Kirche Altersberg

The Evangelical church at Altersberg stands in the hills above the Lieser valley in Carinthia. Built in the 13th century of rough-hewn stone, it is one of the few Romanesque buildings still used for worship in the region. Once dedicated to Saint George, it was first recorded in 1065 and later served as a farm storehouse after being abandoned in the late 18th century. In 1985 it gained official protection and, after careful restoration in the mid-1990s, reopened for Protestant services. The interior reveals layers of medieval artistry. On the north wall a 15th-century fresco shows Saint George slaying the dragon, while the apse holds fragments of a 14th-century Crucifixion. Beneath later 17th-century ornamentation rest older paintings of apostles and saints beneath Christ in Majesty. The late-14th-century Lamb of God and a Triumph-bow fresco of Saint George complete the cycle. Baroquely painted Jesuit saints and the tools of martyrdom add further colour to the walls. Visitors step into a quiet, whitewashed space where every surface tells a story. The flat ceiling of the nave contrasts with the small semicircular apse, its vaulted ceiling covered in uncovered frescoes. Outside, the north wall carries the knightly figure of Saint George and, above the south door, the inscription SPQR recalling ancient Rome. The surrounding woodland and distant peaks frame the little church, making it a peaceful place to reflect on centuries of faith and change.
