Logan Botanic Garden

Logan Botanic Garden lies near Port Logan on the Rhins of Galloway, at Scotland’s south-western tip. It forms part of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s Living Collection and is widely called Scotland’s most exotic garden. The garden shares its grounds with the Logan Estate and a Category A-listed house still held in private hands. Its history began in 1869 when the garden was founded around the ruins of Balzieland Castle. In 1969 the site was given to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to care for. A new glasshouse built in 2014 uses only renewable energy—solar panels and air-source heat pumps keep the interior at 18 °C. In 2019 the garden marked fifty years as part of the Edinburgh collection, though floods in 2021 caused serious damage. The sheltered position and mild, oceanic climate allow plants from Chile, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand to grow outdoors. A sizeable Walled Garden holds a formal fish pond and lawns laid out in geometric patterns. The eco-Conservatory shelters South African species while the Tasmanian Creek area brings together plants from that island. A Discovery Centre hosts seasonal exhibitions that explain the living collection. More than 2,500 species grow here, including 120 threatened with extinction. Along the approach road mature Chusan Palms form a long avenue of Trachycarpus fortunei. Inside the garden the National Plant Collections of Gunnera, Griselinia and Leptospermum can be studied. Ancient Dicksonia antarctica and Cordyline australis, dating from the 1870s, tower beside rare Wollemia plants conserved from Australian stock. Rhododendron kanehirai, extinct in the wild, grows here alongside Maddenia rhododendrons that thrive in the mild air. A Puya alpestris donated by Kew flowered in July 2024 after ten years of growth. Paths wind past collections gathered from Vietnam, where staff have carried out botanical missions collecting seeds and research data.
